Guitar Lesson: SS001 Types of Guitar

What are the different types of guitar?

Broadly there are classified into two types based on how the sound gets amplified- Acoustic and Electric

Acoustic guitars have a hollow body through which the sound from plucking of the strings gets amplified

Electric guitars are not hollow and have magnetic pick ups which convert the sound from strings into electric impulses, further amplified with an amplifier.

The sub-categories include the following
  • Classical guitar can be considered to be an acoustic guitar with broad fret broad and nylon strings
  • Did you know that semi-acoustic guitar is not an acoustic guitar? Its an electric guitar with a hollow body.
  • Electro-acoustic guitars are acoustic guitars with a magnetic pickup for amplification of the sound.
